Purpose : Using fresh-frozen achilles allograft, reconstruction surgery was performed on patient who had injured their ACL in amateur sports activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results and return to their sports activity in these patients.
Materials and Methods : Fifty-four patients, all who were amateur athletes, were able to take part in athletic activities for as long as at least 5 years after the procedure. The average age of study participants was 25 years old (range:18-49). Following recovery they got over 2 hours of exercise on 3 or more occasions a week, on average. Subjective and objective parameters were utilized in analyses, such as: Lysholm knee score, Tegner activity score, Lachman test, Pivot shift test, and IKDC score. The average follow-up period was 5.4 years(range: 5.1-6.2).
Result : The mean Lysholm knee score improved from a preoperative score of 64 points to 88.8 point at last follow up, 16 participants had a Tegner activity grade of VI, 20 cases were grade V, 14 cases were grade IV, and 4 case were grade III at last examination. The distribution of IKDC scores were thus: grade A, 29 cases ; grade B, 20 cases ; and grade C, 5 cases.
Conclusions : Reconstruction of ACL using fresh-frozen achilles allografts resulted in reliable and predictable outcomes with patients returning to sports active post for at least 5 years.
